Cal Ripken is keynote speaker at Convention
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 9/9
Baltimore is known for three things: crabs, lacrosse and Cal Ripken Jr. Attendees of the 2009 US Lacrosse National Convention in January will get to experience at least two out of three of those things first-hand.
Ripken, a Baltimore-area native and youth sports trailblazer, will be the keynote speaker for the Jan. 16-18 convention, sponsored by Adidas. The convention will be held in Baltimore at the Baltimore Convention Center and is considered the largest educational and networking opportunity for lacrosse coaches and officials in the world.
Ripken’s work with youth baseball has broken the mold for leagues and programs world-wide. He has defined the structure and importance of youth sports at the grassroots level by using the platform of baseball. Presently, over 700,000 youths (5-12 year olds) play Cal Ripken Baseball worldwide.
Over the years Ripken has become a best-selling author. His past works include The Only Way I Know, an autobiography; Play Baseball The Ripken Way, an instructional book for parents and coaches; Parenting Young Athletes The Ripken Way, a guide for parents to help them keep sports fun for their kids; and his two latest works: Get in the Game, Eight Elements of Perseverance that Make the Difference, his first foray into the self help/business world; and The Longest Season, a children’s book that teaches kids how to learn from difficult experiences.
Ripken will address the 2009 US Lacrosse National Convention on Friday, January 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Over 5,000 coaches, officials and lacrosse enthusiasts are expected to descend on Baltimore in January. Registration for the 2009 US Lacrosse National Convention will be open on US Lacrosse’s website, www.uslacrosse.org, on Monday, September 15.

Hoyas' Kahoe transfers to national champions Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 8/31
Georgetown’s Scott Kahoe, who struggled through injuries since being highly recruited out of Radnor High five years ago, is transferring to defending national champion Syracuse for his final year of eligibility.
Kahoe, a 6-5, 220-poound midfielder who was a high school All-American in 2004, said he has fully recovered from shoulder injuries that caused him to miss the entire 2007 season.
Last year Kahoe returned to the Hoyas’ lineup following shoulder surgery and played in all 13 games, starting two. He had three goals and two assists and scooped six groundballs.
Kahoe was ranked No. 8 among incoming freshmen by Inside Lacrosse in its 2004 recruiting issue. He had six goals and one assist as a freshman in 2005, and scored NCAA playoff goals against Army and Maryland.
Kahoe scored two goals in his sophomore year, appearing in all 14 Georgetown games.
“Georgetown is one of the best undergraduate educations in the country,” Kahoe told Inside Lacrosse, adding that he is now 100 percent healthy. “It’s also great networking and a great social experience…The friends I made there, on the team and off, are ones I hope to keep in contact with forever.”
Kahoe, who was named Central League MVP as a senior and also was named Genuardi’s “Top High School Athlete,” said he feels starting fresh at Syracuse presented a new opportunity.
“The past is the past and I kind of wanted to move on,” he told Inside Lacrosse. “I can’t overemphasize how excited I am to play the style that Syracuse uses.”
Kahoe is the second Philly athlete to transfer to Syracuse in the past 10 days. John Lade, a defenseman and member of the United States Under-19 team who spent his freshman year at Villanova, also has transferred to Syracuse.

Registration still open for PLA Golf Outing
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 8/25
Registration is being accepted for the Philadelphia Lacrosse Association (PLA) Golf Outing at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club on Monday, Oct. 20.
The annual event supports the PLA's mission to promote the game of lacrosse in the region, particularly its New Start Program, which provides technical and financial assistance to new lacrosse programs. The PLA has provided close to $200,000 in grant support to new lacrosse programs in the area since the outing’s inception in 1993.
Two major projects of focus now are the Philadelphia Middle School Program and PLA's Berks County Initiative. The PLA has been instrumental in helping launch the Philadelphia School District’s middle school lacrosse program, which will feature a high school junior varsity team in 2009 after several seasons of middle school league play.
Last year’s PLA Golf Classic at Rolling Green involved 110 participants, 43 individual and corporate sponsors and raised over $20,000. The proceeds helped the PLA maintain its web site as a portal for lacrosse in the region (www.palacrosse.com), conduct coaches’ clinics, sponsor area tournaments (including the Katie Samson Tournament, the Nick Colleluori Classic, EvanFest and the U.S. Girls Lacrosse Festival) and support area travel teams (including teams competing in the US Youth Lacrosse Festival).
At this year’s event, the PLA plans to honor Tom Bruder for his significant and enduring contribution to Pennsylvania men’s club lacrosse. Mr. Bruder, who will serves as Honorary Chair of the event, sponsored and supported the MAB Paints/Philadelphia Lacrosse Club for almost 20 years.
The PLA welcomes you and your company’s participation and sponsorship to help ensure the outing’s success. The registration form contains additional specifics regarding sponsorship. If you are not a golfer or cannot attend the golfing activities, you are welcome to attend the cocktail reception and banquet that begins on Whitemarsh’s scenic terrace at 5:45 pm.
Please reserve your spot in the outing (or the reception) by completing and returning the event registration form as soon as possible, but in any event before Friday, Oct. 10.

La Salle College High School, recently named the No. 1 team in the country for 2008 by Lacrosse Magazine, has announced a long list of Division I oral commitments for its rich class of incoming seniors.
The Explorers return four All-Americans from a team that went 31-2 and claimed the Pennsylvania state championship. La Salle also won the final Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (EPSLA) title for supremacy in the Philadelphia region.
The most recent decision was finalized Monday when defender Tucker Durkin made a verbal commitment to national runner-up Johns Hopkins. Durkin had committed to Bucknell during the season, but rescinded the decision earlier in the summer.

La Salle, which has won five straight Philadelphia Catholic League crowns, also finished fourth in the LaxPower National Coaches/Computer Ratings Poll and fifth in the STX/Inside Lacrosse National High School Lacrosse Rankings. The team graduates three senior starters, including All-American midfielder Conrad Ridgway (signed with Penn State).
“We had a group of guys that was really close and they somehow had the intangibles,” said La Salle coach Bill Leahy, whose team had the most wins of any team in the nation last year and has a 138-14 record the past five years. “I have to believe that helps you win. You can’t measure that.”(CONTINUE)

Positive Self-Talk can increase your performance
By Pete Bendig
IronPsychWorks, Inc.
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 8/14
This session we are going to discuss the technique of Positive Self-Talk. This technique can be used in many (if not all) facets of your life that require improvement.
Of course, it needs to be adjusted and personalized to the aspect of your life in which you need help.
So what is Positive Self-Talk? Positive Self-Talk refers to the dialogue that goes on inside your head when faced with conflict or challenges within your lax game.
It features positive statements that help you overcome any challenge
that you are confronting during your games, practices and or training by building your confidence and esteem.
Now, be aware that there is also Negative Self-Talk, which is sometimes called stinking thinking. Negative Self-Talk erodes your self-worth and self-esteem.
Try playing your best game when your mind is racing and you are telling yourself that your performance is horrible, or your coach is mad at you or even your teammates don’t have faith in your game. Tough isn’t it?
I used to thrive on opponents who were stinking thinking. There is no need to get into their heads. They are already in their own head ruining their own game.
I have an example of a Positive Self-Talk script that I created for a collegiate lacrosse player.
He was a senior at a Division III university and had limited playing time his junior year, but became a regular starter his senior year and had an outstanding season. (CONTINUE)
