No. 1 La Salle shoots for final Keystone Cup title

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 6/5
La Salle edged Malvern Prep, 4-3, for the final Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (EPSLA) title. Now, the Explorers shoot for the last Keystone Cup trophy Friday against Manheim Township at Comet Field at Penn Manor High in Millersville. The year’s final Phillylacrosse.com Poll:
    1. La Salle (30-2) – The Explorers get the distinction of winning the last EPSLA championship. Now they want the honor of taking the final Keystone Cup title. Last week: No. 2.
    2. Malvern Prep (21-3) – The Friars fell short in their goal of being the last EPSLA and Keystone Cup champion. But still, wow, what a talented team. Last week: No. 1.
    3. Haverford School (17-7) – The Fords may need a long time to get over the unforgettable 7-6, double-overtime loss to La Salle in the semifinals. It won’t be the same with them and the rest of the Inter-Ac League teams being out of contention for state gold. Last week: No. 3.
    4. Penn Charter (16-12) – The Quakers were a major story in the post season, knocking off two high seeds, Germantown Academy and Ridley, in succession before giving Malvern Prep a battle in the semis. Last week: No. 9.
    5. Ridley (19-3) – The Green Raiders seemed to lose momentum when lightning suspended their quarterfinal game against Penn Charter for a day. But they did reach one major goal – their first Central League championship since 2002. They’ll be a major force in District One next year. Last week: No. 4.
    6. Downingtown East (15-7) – The Cougars were unable to repeat as state champions, but coach Tom Slate has built a powerhouse in five short seasons. Last week: No. 6.
    7. St. Joseph’s Prep (22-5) – Take heart Hawks - second best in the Catholic League is not so bad when the top team is La Salle. The Hawks’ best game may have been their 6-5 loss to the Explorers in the Catholic League title game. Last week: No. 5.
    8. Germantown Academy (13-7) – The Patriots will lament their 9-8 overtime loss to Penn Charter in the first round of the playoffs all summer, but they enjoyed a strong season (for example, their 3-2 win over La Salle). Last week: No. 7.
    9. Springfield-Delco (16-6) - The sophomore-laden Cougars were a legitimate Central League contender this year and should be a District One power for at least the next two years. Last week: No. 8.
    10. Lower Merion (17-5) – After winning just eight of 27 games in the Central League the previous three seasons, The Aces were one of the most improved teams in the EPSLA. Last week: No. 10.
    The rest of the top 25: 11. Conestoga (14-8); 12. Episcopal Academy (14-12); 13. Garnet Valley (16-7); 14. Abington (16-6); 15. Radnor (11-11); 16. Central Bucks East (13-4). 17. Penncrest (11-10). 18. Strath Haven (13-8); 19. Emmaus (16-3); 20. Hatboro-Horsham (18-3). 21. Great Valley (13-7); 22. Unionville (11-10); 23. Hill School (11-5); 24. Archbishop Wood (17-7); 25. Avon Grove (9-6).

Undefeated Red Raiders finish season at the top

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 6/4

The season concluded Tuesday as Radnor completed a perfect 23-0 season and Springfield-Delco won its fifth district crown in six years. The final Phillylacrosse.com Scholastic Girls Top 10 Poll:
    1. Radnor (23-0) – The Red Raiders, who won their first District One Class AAA crown since 2003, had one of the best teams in the history of the state. Is anyone going to argue that? Last week: No. 1.
    2. Bayard Rustin (17-3) – It was a perfect match when the school was formed two years ago; a brand new program with some talent and a savvy veteran coach like Dale Watkins. The results were a 36-6 record, an appearance in the 2007 Final Four and this year’s second-place finish to Radnor. Last week: No. 2.
    3. Springfield-Delco (19-3) – The Cougars lost most of their team from a 21-0 squad in 2007. No big deal – they won their third straight Class AA championship and fifth in six years. Last week: No. 3.
    4. Great Valley (19-4) – The Patriots, who settled for being No. 2 both in their league (behind Rustin) and the district (behind Springfield-Delco) are pretty good for a second-place team: Last week: No. 4.
    5. Strath Haven (18-4) – The Panthers return Emily Garrity and just about everybody else from a team that has made the Class AA Final Four the past two years. They should be a force next year in the chase for an official state title. Last week: No. 5.
    6. Archbishop Carroll (15-4) – The Patriots, after winning eight straight Catholic League titles, now move into the PIAA and can vie for a state title. Watch out! Last week: No. 7.
    7. Downingtown West (20-3) – The Whippets closed their season with a disappointing 19-10 loss to Bayard Rustin in the district semis. But do not forget they went undefeated in winning the Ches-Mont National Conference. Last week: No. 6.
    8. Boyertown (19-4) – The Bears, champions of the Pioneer Athletic Conference for the fifth straight year, were overmatched in the district semis by Radnor. OK, who wasn’t? Last week: No. 8.
    9. Abington (18-2) – The tough news: both of the Ghosts’ losses were by one goal. The better news: they lose only three seniors (but yes, very strong players) and should be a power again next year. Last week: No. 9.
    10. Unionville (12-8) – The Indians beat No. 3 Springfield and No. 4 Great Valley, among others – not too shabby. Last week: unranked.
    The Rest of the Top 25: 11. Villa Maria Academy (19-3); 12, Episcopal Academy (16-4); 13. Ridley (13-8); 14. North Penn (14-6); 15. Downingtown East (16-5); 16. Conestoga (13-7); 17. Upper Dublin (15-5); 18. Germantown Academy (12-8); 19. Archbishop Wood (16-3); 20. Baldwin (13-6); 21. Notre Dame (14-6); 22. Penn Charter (10-6); 23. Avon Grove (11-8); 24. Spring-Ford (13-7). 25. Council Rock North (11-7).

Playoffs heat up as EPSLA heads to semis

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/28

Due to lightning during the first half of last night’s quarterfinal playoff game between Ridley and Penn Charter, only one team has advanced to the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (EPSLA) semifinals. The rest of the field will be decided tonight. The 11th Phillylacrosse.com Scholastic Boys Top 10 Poll:
    1. Malvern Prep (20-2) – The Friars looked positively dominant in their 12-0 blanking of Springfield-Delco Tuesday in the quarterfinals. They will be a prohibitive favorite when they meet the Ridley-Penn Charter winner in the semifinals. Last week: No. 1.
    2. La Salle (27-2) – The Explorers face St. Joseph’s Prep (6 p.m. at Central Bucks West) in a classic rematch of the Catholic League championship game, won 6-5 by La Salle. Last week: No. 2.
    3. Haverford School (16-6) – The Fords face a stern test tonight (8 p.m. at CB West) in the semifinals against a Downingtown East team they defeated in overtime at the Katie Samson Festival. It may be even harder this time. Last week: No. 3.
    4. Ridley (19-2) – The Green Raiders have their hands full with a rejuvenated Penn Charter in the completion of last night’s suspended game. Last week: No. 4.
    5. St. Joseph’s Prep (22-4) – The Hawks get their chance again against La Salle, a team they were leading heading into the fourth quarter the first time out. Last week: No. 6.
    6. Downingtown East (15-6) – Can the defending state champions make it back to the semifinals? Last week: No. 7.
    7. Germantown Academy (13-7) – The Patriots were unceremoniously knocked out in the first round by Penn Charter Friday in a heartbreaking overtime defeat. Still, an excellent year for the Pats, whose highlight was a masterful win over La Salle. Last week: No. 5.
    8. Springfield-Delco (16-6) - The young Cougars were schooled by a Malvern Prep team that is probably one of the 10 best in the country, if not better. But with a team full of sophomores, watch out next year! Last week: No. 8.
    9. Penn Charter (15-11) – The Quakers are a different team with middie Eddie Bambino (Ohio State recruit) back from several injuries. They pulled off a clutch 9-8 overtime thriller over GA in the first round and are tied with Ridley as they finish the completed quarterfinal game tonight. Last week: unranked.
    10. Lower Merion (17-5) – The Aces were again outworked by Springfield-Delco in Friday’s first-round loss. But they were perhaps the most improved team in the EPSLA. Last week: No. 9.
Under consideration: Episcopal Academy, Conestoga, Garnet Valley, Strath Haven, Radnor, Abington.

    8. Boyertown (18-3) – The Bears, a 13-2 first-round winner over Council Rock South, need to be wary of their second-round opponent, North Penn. Boyertown walloped the Maidens, 18-4, early in the year, but NP is coming on. Last week: No. 8.
