By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/15

La Salle coach Bill Leahy was not surprised his Explorers needed to play their best game against St. Joseph’s Prep in tonight’s Catholic League boys’ championship game.
“That’s what we expected, it’s a great rivalry,” said Leahy. “It’s a great rivalry in all the sports. When these teams play throw everything out the window. There’s a lot of emotion.”
In front of a large crowd at Plymouth Whitemarsh, La Salle rallied for a 6-5 thriller over the stubborn Hawks, claiming its fifth straight league crown and 14th under Leahy in his 17 years at the helm.
Randy Forster, Pete Schwartz (two goals) and Kevin Forster tallied consecutive goals to open the fourth quarter after The Prep (20-4) had notched four unanswered goals to seize a 4-3 lead.
Brendan O’Donnell (two goals, two assists) brought the Hawks within 6-5 off a feed from Bob Hurley with 3 minutes, 29 seconds to play. But La Salle, which dominated possession in the second half thanks to junior face-off man Derek Bogorowski, salted the rest of the clock.

Cougars pick up big win over Aces in finale, 11-4

By Ben Skalina
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/14

Groundballs were the story on Tuesday night at Springfield-Delco.
The Cougars got nearly all of them, and controlled the game from start to finish for an 11-4 thumping of Lower Merion in a key Central League tilt.
Springfield, ranked eighth by Phillylacrosse.com, finishes 7-2 in league play (14-5 overall) and ties with Radnor for second in the league. The 10th-ranked Aces dropped to 6-3 in the Central League (16-4 overall) and finish tied for fourth with Conestoga.
“We just picked them up, picked them up, picked them up, and I felt like they never got into a good offensive groove,” Springfield coach Mike Friel said of his team’s groundball play and its effect on Lower Merion’s game.
The fun started early for the Cougars and never stopped. Josh Cavanaugh (three goals) picked the ball up off of an illegal procedure on the first face-off, and immediately dodged and scored just 11 seconds in. On the next possession, Colin Keegan (three goals) took an assist from Joe Arrell (three goals, two assists) on the crease and pushed the advantage to two goals.
Arrell then dodged down the right side and scored a few minutes later, and Keegan took a Matt Kelly feed behind the cage and converted it as he came around the net to make the lead 4-0.
“They’ve got to short one of us,” Arrell said of the threat he and Cavanaugh pose from midfield. “We really look to dodge and kick it around, get good shots and get Colin open.”
Jordan Wolf temporarily stopped the bleeding after he dodged from behind and found Matt Wilks open to cut the gap to three, but the Cougars answered back through Jordan Demcher and Arrell in the last minute of the first quarter, making it 6-1. (CONTINUE)

Interboro tops Harriton, claims share of Del-Val

By Willie McGonigle
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/14

After giving up late leads in its last two Del-Val League games, Interboro made the clutch plays Wednesday.
The host Bucs got standout goaltending from Melissa Jenkins and four goals each from Kerri Boon and Steph Parcell to claim a critical 10-8 triumph over Harriton in a game that forced a three-way tie for the Del-Val League championship.
The outcome left Interboro, Harriton and Sun Valley atop the league with 6-2 mark. All three teams are hopeful of earning berths in the District 1 tournament, which begins next week.
The Bucs were coming off recent heartbreaking defeats to Harriton, 8-7, and Sun Valley, 15-14. In each case Interboro lost the lead at the end; in fact the Bucs had a 10-4 halftime pad on the Vanguards.
This time, Interboro jumped to a 5-0 lead, but found itself ahead just 9-8 late in the game. Jenkins, though, made numerous saves and finished with 15 in all while the Bucs’ defense forced enough turnovers to stymie the comeback.
“It’s an awesome feeling,” said Boon, who will study nursing and play lacrosse at Gwynedd-Mercy College. “Even through we lost (those two games), we just kept working hard to accomplish our goal.”
Parcell, who has been the team’s key midfielder and top scorer at center, played at a home position due to a sprained ankle.
“They work really well together, they are a deadly duo,” Bucs coach Diane Faison said of Boon and Parcell.
Also scoring for Interboro were Britt McCann and Danielle Haney. Jess Rothstein scored four goals and Chrissy Pasquariello had three for the Rams.
“You have to give Interboro credit,” said Harriton coach George Dick. “They came out in the first half and jumped out to a 5-0 lead and we could not catch up.”

Betsy Sachs added four goals for Germantown Friends while Mariah Barstow collected three goals, two assists and nine groundballs. Goalie Rebecca Williams had 10 saves for the Tigers – one from point-blank as time ran out in regulation – and Cate Barrett had six groundballs to pace the defense.
Tara Stokes led Shipley with six goals and three assists.
In George School’s win, Lisa Bernardini and Stephanie Feinman each pumped in six goals for the Cougars. Curry D’Ignazio led Westtown with five goals.

Strath Haven 18, Penncrest 5
Emily Garrity colleted four goals and six assists, while Kelly Ruffini and Courtney DeVinney had five goals and an assist each to spark the host Panthers (15-3, 7-2) to a Central League rout of the Lions.

Brooke Campbell scored four goals and Kaitlin Hildebrand added three as the host Pioneers (12-6, 7-3) closed their Central League season with an easy win. Allie Henry led the Jaguars (4-14, 2-8) with a pair of goals.
Germantown Academy 13, Baldwin 11

Downingtown East rallies past Conestoga

By Ben Skalina
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/9
The story Thursday night at Conesoga’s Teamer Field was two teams going in opposite directions.
The host Pioneers started fast but couldn’t sustain their momentum, and Downingtown East controlled the game late for a 7-4 non-league win.
The results mirrored how both teams’ seasons have gone to date, as Downingtown (11-6) started 2-5, partly due a tough schedule, before winning nine out of the next 10. Conestoga (11-7), on the other hand, started 10-2, but has found the going rough recently; with five losses in six games since a 6-3 win over Haverford High.
The Pioneers’ quick start was keyed by Brendan Burke and Paul Mita, who each registered a goal and an assist as Conestoga took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. That was where the fun ended for Stoga, though.
Conestoga coach Brian Samson liked his team’s effort but added that the Pioneers weren’t sharp enough offensively to get the win.
“When you play against Downingtown East, you need to make more plays than they do,” Samson said of a Cougars team ranked eighth by Phillylacrosse.com. “We didn’t do that tonight.”
Downingtown kept its roll going in large part due to a veteran defense and the efforts of Maryland-bound attackman Owen Blye (one goal, four assists). Blye kick-started the Cougars’ offense in the second quarter after getting shut out in the first when he fed Kyle Marcks and Dylan Hoff (two goals, one assist) to bring East to within a goal at 3-2.
The Cougars finally tied things up when Blye fed Taylor Nelson (two goals, one assist) on the fast break with three-tenths of a second left in the first half.
After Blye got Downingtown going, the veteran defense in front of goalkeeper Mike Strathy kept Conestoga on lockdown, turning away multiple man-up opportunities.
Seniors Chris Walsh (Drexel), Alex Gannett (Penn State), Justin Hummel (Drexel) and junior Mason Poli put together a standout final three quarters as they limited the Pioneers to just three shots on goal over the final three quarters.
After the game, Downingtown East head coach Tom Slate praised his defense, while looking forward to the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association playoffs.
“Now is the time to be getting all your ducks in a row,” Slate said of his defending state champions. “We’re getting there.”

Maidens shock Ghosts to take share of title

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/8
Lauren McDermott scored five goals and Alyssa Culp added three as host North Penn shocked previously-undefeated Abington, 13-12, Thursday to claim at least a share of the Suburban One National Conference girls’ championship.
The win gave the Maidens (14-4 overall) a final league mark of 11-1 and dropped the Ghosts (16-1) to 10-1. Abington, ranked fifth by Phillylacrosse.com, must defeat Pennridge on Tuesday to tie for the crown.
Last year, North Penn, Abington and Council Rock North tied for the title.
The Ghosts whipped the Maidens, 19-7, when the teams first met at Abington April 17. But this time North Penn took a 9-6 halftime lead and got standout defense from Dianna Milano, Sara Ciaverelli, Caley Britton, and Brittany Hanrahan to hold on to the victory.
“I think when we left Abington the last time - and they pretty much dismantled us and picked apart our defense - we kind of made a promise to ourselves that we’d get better every day and win out in the league so we could face them again,” said NP coach Jami Wilus.
“I think they were more motivated bv the fact that I don’t think anybody gave us a chance. They were pretty much writing Abington in as the winner of the Suburban National.

"As far as we were concerned, that title came through us.”
Ali Herman added a goal and two assists for NP while Halie Lear and Ali Green scored once each. Lyndsy Hepler posted seven saves, including one key saves in the final seconds, for the win. Rachel Dirksen had five goals to lead Abington and Lisa O'Donnell added two goals and two assists.
“This team has been really resilient,” Wilus said. “We have only three seniors playing now. The rest are underclassmen. This team showed more fight and desire than I have ever seen. I knew it would be tough to win, but I knew they could do it.”
Harriton 20, Penn Wood 6
Carli Sukonik tallied four goals while Allison Zuzelo, Betsy Hurtado and Cori Sussman added three apiece as the visiting Rams claimed a key Del-Val League win and moved into first place.
Harriton (12-5, 6-1) is one-half game ahead of Sun Valley (6-2 league), which defeated Interboro (5-2), 15-14, Thursday. The Rams will need to defeat the Bucs Wednesday on the road to clinch the crown. Goalie Sam Trudgeon made eight saves for Harriton.

Sun Valley 15, Interboro 14

Krissy Finn's goal with two minutes to play lifted the host Vanguards to a stunning comeback in the Del-Val game. Interboro led, 10-4, at halftime.

Kelly Custer pumped in eight goals for Sun Valley, which avenged a 15-8 loss to the Bus two weeks ago. Steph Parcell scored five goals and Danielle Haney added three for Interboro.
Notre Dame 11, Baldwin 10, 2OT
Kelly McCallion (four goals) scored in the final seconds of the second overtime to lift the Fighting Irish (14-4, 7-3) to the Inter-Ac League win over the Bears (13-4, 6-4). Katie Blumenthal added three goals

Freshman Sloan Warren scored six goals for Baldwin, giving her 120 for the season.

By Willie McGonigle
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/7

With the 2008 boys’ season nearing its end, teams are fighting for playoff spots in the final Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (EPSLA) playoffs.
That made Wednesday’s non-league contest between visiting Penn Charter of the powerful Inter-Ac League and Penncrest of the always-rugged Central League crucial for both teams.
The host Lions started strong with a 3-0 lead in the first period, but Penn Charter rallied for a 12-9 victory. The Quakers, ranked seventh by Phillylacrosse.com, improved to 13-7 while Penncrest fell to 9-9.
“We started off slow, but we came out in the second quarter and our defense picked up,” said Quaker senior Ryan Goldman, who scored three goals. “We started winning face-offs.”
The Quakers also received three goals from Joey Sankey, and two goals apiece from Stephen McVeigh, Colin Still and Blaise Fullen. Dan Carr notched eight saves to earn the win.
Penn Charter head coach Pat McDonough gave credit to Penncrest: “They are a top-notch team; you always have to come out and get on them.”
Dan Jones led the Lions with three goals.
Penn Charter now gears for a showdown with Phillylacrossecom's No. 1 team, Malvern Prep – which clinched the Inter-Ac title Tuesday - Friday at home.

The Lions need a win next Tuesday against Strath Haven in their Central League finale to remain in the race for an EPSLA berth.

Malvern Prep solves GA, 16-4, clinches Inter-Ac

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/6

Malvern Prep has made it clear of its goal to win both the final Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association (EPSLA) championship and the state title.
But the Friars first wanted to take care of business in their own back yard.
Tuesday at Germantown Academy, Malvern looked like a team ready to make a run at state gold when it battered Germantown Academy, 16-4 to clinch the Inter-Ac League crown.
The Friars (15-2 overall) used a balanced attack and pinpoint passing to improve to 9-0 in the Inter-Ac. They shoot for a perfect 10-0 campaign Friday at Penn Charter and finish the regular season with non-league games against Lawrenceville School (N.J.) on May 14 and Radnor on May 16.
“It’s always a huge feather in our cap to win the Inter-Ac,” said Malvern coach John McEvoy. “Our assessment was that whoever wins the Inter-Ac is going to have to earn it. It’s always important to our guys.”
The Friars, ranked No. 2 by Phillylacrosse.com in last week’s poll, first had to solve a Germantown Academy zone defense that totally frustrated top-ranked La Salle last week in a 3-2 upset victory.
Malvern, though, went to work early, hitting open men deep inside the middle of the GA zone while scoring four goals in the final six minutes of the opening period to seize a 4-0 lead. The Friars led 7-1 at halftime and never looked back.
Senior Christian Kellett had three goals and three assists to lead the assault while Colin McGeehin added three goals and two assists and Conor Steidle had three goals and one assist. Freshman Mike Dougherty tallied three late goals while Bobby Hill had two scores.
“They ran a zone so we had guys in the crease,” Kellett said. “We wanted to keep moving the ball around with quick passes to beat the zone. That’s probably the best showing against a zone defense we’ve had.
“After they beat La Salle, we knew we had a test coming up.”
Kellett said winning the Inter-Ac is a big accomplishment.
“I think this is the second-best lacrosse league in the U.S. other than Maryland,” he said.(CONTINUE)

Radnor passes 'gut check,' defeats Cougars

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/29
After blowing out every opponent it saw this year, one wondered how Radnor would react to a legitimate challenge.
Tuesday the Red Raiders had their chance – and they didn’t mess it up.
Radnor fell behind, 9-7, to defending Central League champion Springfield-Delco, but rallied for a 13-12 victory over the Cougars in a showdown of league unbeatens.
The win left the Raiders – ranked No. 1 by Phillylacrosse.com - alone atop the league standings with a 7-0 mark (14-0 overall). Springfield, ranked fourth, falls to 6-1 (11-3 overall).
“It was really kind of a gut check and we hadn’t been in that situation yet, but we knew we had it in us,” said Radnor senior co-captain Kelly Barnes. “We know the target on our back keeps on getting bigger.”
The Cougars had seized the two-goal lead by rattling off the first four goals of the second half – two by Madison Poplawski and one each by Rebecca Hartrum (three goals) and Samantha Tajarian (three goals).
But senior co-captain Beth Ellis (three goals) cut the deficit to 9-8 with 18 minutes, 33 seconds to play and sophomore Courtney Campbell (six goals) scored twice to give Radnor a 10-9 advantage with 16:22 left.
Springfield-Delco responded with goals by Aly Adams and Tajarian to take the lead again, 11-10, but Ellis fed Molly Early for the game-tying tally and then put the Raiders ahead for good off a free position shot with 8:35 to play.
Barnes (three assists) scored on a crucial insurance goal with 4:49 to play before Hartrum made it 13-12 with 1:34 to play.
"For the Central League title this was an important game,” said Barnes. “They won it last year and the last time we won it was in 2003. This is something we all really wanted, and a goal we set in the beginning of the year.”
One key to Radnor’s comeback was its ability to gain possession of the draws. Ellis, Barnes, Kelyn Freedman and Kelsey Martin shared in taking the draws.
“Draw controls were the most important thing, because every time we got a draw we’d score,” Ellis said. (CONTINUE)

O'Connor lifts Fords past Cougars in OT

By Chris Goldberg & Willie McGonigle
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 4/26

Two teams that figure to make some noise in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association playoffs hooked up Saturday in classic battle at the 8th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor.
Rory O’Connor took a perfect feed from Colton Growney and scored the game-winner with 1 minute, 43 seconds left in the second overtime to give Haverford School a 6-5 triumph over Downingtown East.
The goal capped a strong comeback by the Fords, who trailed, 4-0, until scoring three goals within a 49-second span in the closing minutes of the third period.
Shane Sturgis, however, gave the Cougars a 5-3 lead on a steal and a breakaway goal with 6:49 to play. But Stephen Aitken cut the deficit to 5-4 with 3:46 to play and Mike Rufo sent the game into overtime off a Craig Owen feed with just two seconds to play.
Haverford, which had possession most of the second half, also controlled the ball during the entire overtime periods. O’Connor had plenty of room to beat Mike Strathy (12 saves) after taking the pass from Growney.
“My teammates just set it up perfectly,” said O’Connor, a senior who was mobbed by the Haverford team after the goal. “I don’t think I could have asked for a better setup. It was the greatest experience of my life.”
Downingtown East (8-6), which had its six-game win streak snapped, took a 4-0 lead on a pair of goals by Dylan Hoff and one each by Taylor Nelson and Andrew Zelinski. But Growney, Owen and Rufo ended the shutout in style with the late third-period flurry.
“Our seniors really stepped it up today,” O’Connor said. “And we had some great play from juniors like Mike Rufo and Colton Growney. One of our mottos is, ‘We can never give up.’”
O’Connor said the Fords (10-4), who have five straight wins and are ranked third by Phillylacrosse.com, are peaking for the end of the season.
“We’re starting to turn the corner,” he said. “We started off strong, then we went into a little slump. We didn’t play as well as we should have, but we played well enough to win.”
The Cougars, ranked seventh, also appear primed to make a post-season run.
“We started out well and couldn’t clear the ball out of our end, and when we did in the third period we threw it away,” said Downingtown East coach Tom Slate. “And they possessed the ball 80 percent of the game. We got caught at the end there.
“This stings a little, but we’re geared up for the playoffs.”
La Salle 9, Ridley 4
Westy Hopkins scored four goals and goalie Niko Amato had nine saves to pace the No. 1 Explorers (21-1) to a win over the fourth-ranked Raiders (13-2). La Salle, ranked fourth in the STX/Inside Lacrosse National High School Poll, won its 20th straight game.     Tyler Johnston had two goals for Ridley. (CONTINUE)
Katie Samson cherishes her annual homecoming

By Chris Goldberg
Phillylacrosse.com, posted 4/26

Katie Samson admits she is one of the luckiest people around – after all, who gets to have thousands of people come to their homecoming every year?
Saturday at Radnor, Samson enjoyed perhaps the most special homecoming yet at the 8th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival.
Samson, after all, is the namesake for the charity event that has raised approximately $800,000 for spinal cord injury research and short-term care for spinal cord patients. This year’s festival drew the largest field (48 high school teams and many youth teams) ever and featured nearly every ranked boys’ and girls’ team in the Philadelphia area, according to local polls.
For Samson, this event held even greater meaning. For one, her alma mater got to host the event, which for the first time was held at one site.
After the morning games, Samson was introduced at the turf field by her former coach, veteran Radnor mentor Phyllis Kilgour. A presentation was made for $10,000 to the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in the name of the Katie Samson Foundation.
Samson – who now resides in Tucson, Ariz. - said she is amazed by the growth of the event and how the entire Philadelphia lacrosse community has embraced the role of fundraising.
“It’s really overwhelming because I spend a large major of the year not in Philadelphia,” she said. “When I come back it’s overwhelming, emotionally, to see the amount of support. There are so many friends and family members here.”
“Plus, there’s the importance of young people having (more than just) an event to play for. They now can fundraise for the event themselves.”
Samson noted how high school players assist in the fundraising drive by selling Wings tickets and encouraging fans to attend the event.
“Every year it keeps getting bigger and bigger and one team wants to outdo another team for fundraising,” she said. “When have you ever heard of a high school kid wanting to compete to fund raise? That’s tremendous that we can instill that in a young athlete in high school." (CONTINUE)

One of Villa Maria Academy’s top goals in 2008 was to avenge its three losses last year to Merion Mercy.
Wednesday the Hurricanes completed a sweep of their regular-season games against the host Bears by claiming a hard-fought 13-11 Catholic Academies League (CAL) victory.
The win moved Villa Maria to 7-0 in the CAL and 9-1 overall. Merion Mercy, which won both regular-season meetings and the league title game over Villa last year, fell to 7-2 in the league and 8-2 overall.
