Then, Rattlers attackman Casey Powell scored the game-winning goal just 45 seconds into overtime to give Rochester its first-ever play-off victory, a 16-15 win over the two-time defending champion Barrage. The Rattlers advance to the NB Zip Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Denver, a 13-12 overtime winner or Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the loss marked the first-ever postseason loss for the Barrage, who had won six straight playoff games prior to this year. Attackman Joe Walters led the Rattlers with four goals and three assists while midfielder Colin Doyle added two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Brett Queener made four saves in the second half. Midfielder Roy Colsey led Philadelphia in a losing effort, scoring three goals with three assists. Striebel and Sweeney led the two-time defending champion Barrage to a 7-5 season and a berth in the NB ZIP M LL Championship Weekend. The Barrage will face the top-seeded and Eastern Conference champion Rochester Rattlers on Saturday, August 23 at Harvard Stadium in the first semi-final at 12 p.m., which will be broadcast live on ESPN2. Named to the All-MLL Team for the second consecutive season, Striebel ranked secon d on the Barrage in scoring with 42 points, scoring a career-best 31 goals with 11 assists. He ranked third among midfielders in both categories. Striebel scored a season-high four goals four times, including the season finale against New Jersey when he tallied four goals with two assists. Over the last three seasons, he has scored 79 goals while helping the Barrage reach the postseason in each campaign. A two-time selection to the All-MLL Team, Sweeney led Philadelphia to its third straight NB ZIP MLL Championship Weekend berth after scoring five goals with four assists in 11 games. Barrage's Resch earns MLL Coach of the Y ear Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 8/16 Tony Resch of the Philadelphia Barrage has been named the 2008 Brine Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Coach of the Year. Resch was selected by the general managers and head coaches of the 10 MLL teams. Resch, who also won the award in 2006, becomes the second coach in MLL history to be named as the Coach of the Year twice. Scott Hiller earned the award in 2002 and 2005 when he was the head coach of the Boston Cannons. Finally on Saturday, due to an illness, the Penn State graduate got his chance to make his first Major League Lacrosse (MLL) start – and he made the best of it. K eenan posted 27 saves and led the Barrage (7-4) to a critical 16-11 MLL victory over the host Boston Cannons before 8,648 at Harvard Stadium, a victory that clinched a playoff berth for the two-time defending champions. The performance earned Keenan the game MVP award, and Monday he was named the MLL’s Goalie of the Week. Keenan had been in goal for only 30 minutes of time all season and 139 minutes in three years as the backup to standout Brian Dougherty (Episcopal Academy) until Saturday. His efforts helped Philadelphia improve to 7-4 and take over second place in the Eastern Conference. Dougherty, a three-time MLL goalie of the Year, did not make the trip due to a viral infection. The Barrage close their regular season Saturday night against New Jersey at Hillsboro (Ore.) Stadium near Portland. Prossner was making his first appearance in a game since May 25th. He suffered a broken hand against the Long Island Lizards and has been out of the line-up. Gurenlian earned game MVP honors by winning 31 of 41 face-offs and nearly tying an MLL record for groundballs with 22. He also had a goal and three assists as the Dragons improved to 3-7. Gurenlian was one ground ball shy of the league record, which was set by Paul Cantabene during the 2004 season with the Baltimore Bayhawks. Wings veteran Bergey taken in expansion draft Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 7/25 Philadelphia Wings veteran forward Jake Bergey was selected Thursday in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Expansion Draft by the Boston Blazers. The Blazers selected a total of 12 players in the Expansion Draft, one from each NLL franchi se. “We are a bit surprised at Boston’s decision to select Jake i n the draft because he has yet to make any official decision on whether or not he will play in 2009,” said Wings GM Lindsay Sanderson. Bergey has played all of his 11 NLL seasons in Philadelphia and was part of two championship teams (1998 and 2001). He is second all-time in Wings history with 555 total points (257 goals, 298 assists). He had 29 goals and 31 assists in 2008. It was Bergey's highest point total since he had 60 in 2002. Bergey became only the second Wings player in history to record his 500th point with his six-point performance in the Wings 2008 home opener against Chicago. The Wings selected him in the fifth round of the 1998 NLL Entry Draft out of Salisbury State University. Bergey is also the son of legendary Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey. The Blazers are coached by former Philadelphia Wings forward (2000-03) Tom Ryan and will play their 2009 home games in the TD Banknorth Garden. Christmas fires in game-winner for Cannons Attackman John Christmas (Lower Merion) earned MVP honors with his game-winning goal with just five seconds left on the game clock as the Boston Cannons defeated the Long Island Lizards, 13-12, in front of 9,178 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday night. The Cannons (5-3) are tied with Rochester for second place in the Eastern Division, one-half game behind the Barrage. Christmas has 13 goals and 13 assists this year. Dougherty earned his fifth career Goalkeeper of the Week award after posting a season-high 28 saves in the Barrage's 16-14 victory over Boston on Thursday night. He made 15 of those saves in the first half as the Barrage jumped out to a 12 -6 half-time lead and snapped the Cannons' three-game win streak. Dougherty, who has won the Goalkeeper of the Week for an MLL-record third time this season, has stopped 66.7 per cent of the shots he has faced over the last two games while making 52 saves. He ranks third in the league with a .571 save percentage in eight games. Meanwhile, New Jersey Pride attackman and Philadelphia Wings rookie standout Merrick Thomson was named as the Offensive Player of the Week while Long Island Lizards midfielder Peter Vlahakis earned his fourth Defensive Player of the Week award this season, including his second straight honor. On Thursday the Episcopal Academy graduate posted almost twice as many saves – 28 – to help the Barrage defeat the host Boston Cannons, 16-14, at Harvard’s Cambrdge Stadium. The victory was the third in four games for the Barrage (5-3).  Dougherty was named Game MVP and continued to make everyone who didn’t vote for him as an MLL All-Star wonder how they could keep him off the roster. While Dougherty led the Philadelphia defense, Roy Colsey was sparking the Barrage offense. Returning to the lineup after a two-game absence, the former Syracuse University midfielder scored three goals with two assists while three other players added a hat trick. Matt Alrich, who is enjoying a career year for the Cannons, led Boston with three goals and three assists in a lohing effort. John Christmas (Lower Merion) added two goals and an assist. The loss snapped Boston’s three-game winning streak. The Barrage led by 12-6 at the intermission and earned the victory despite being outshot by a commanding 68-36 margin. Barrage rally for clutch 12-11 victory over Chicago Phillylacrosse.com, posted 6/15 Seth Goldberg scored off a feed from Ryan Boyle for the game-winning goal with 1 minute, 42 seconds left in overtime to complete a brilliant comeback and give the Philadelphia Barrage a 12-11 Major League Lacrosse victory Saturday over the Chicago Machine at Anheuser-Busch Center in St. Louis, Mo. The Barrage (3-2) scored two goals in the last 2:08 of regulation to send it into overtime and snap a two-game losing streak. After the teams traded goals to open the fourth quarter, the Machine scored three consecutive goals, including a pair from Kevin Leveille, to take an 11-9 lead with 2:44 left. Michael Springer scored off a pass from Peter Trombino with 2:08 remaining, closing the margin to 11-10. With five seconds left, Ray Colsey sent the game into overtime with an unassisted goal, which set up the heroics. Making his Major League Lacrosse debut, Podgajny scored the game-winning goal in the Dragons’ 15-14 overtime victory against the Chicago Machine on Saturday night. He converted a feed from Dragons captain Liam Banks just 49 seconds into the extra session as the Dragons snapped a two-game losing streak. Banks drew the Machine defense off their zone leaving Podgajny unattended at the crease. Taking one pump fake to move the keeper, Podgajny fired into the net giving the Dragons the win. The seventh overall pick in the Collegiate Draft, Podgajny scored two goals with three assists in the victory and was also named as the Most Valuable Player of the Game. Podgajny was a two-time honorable mention All-American at Notre Dame where he had 34 points (25 goals and 9 assists) his senior season, finishing his career with 68 goals and 36 assists in 53 games before being drafted in the MLL. The two-time defending champions dropped their second straight game and fell to 2-2 Thursday when they suffered a 22-12 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) loss to the host Long Island Lizards before a crowd of 3,148. The stat sheet told all: Long Island outshot the Barrage, 40-21, and won 24 of 36 face-offs. The Lizards (2-2) took a 9-6 halftime lead and poured it on in the final quarter when they outscored Philadelphia, 8-3. Seth Goldberg and Mike Springer led the Barrage with three goals apiece while Ray Colsey (two-pointer) added two goals and an assist.
