Penn rallies to edge Blue Devils in two OTs, 9-8
(CONTINUED)
Penn’s standout senior goalie, Sarah Waxman, was impressive with seven saves. Four of the Blue Devils’ goals came on difficult free-position shots. Possibly her biggest save of the day came with 24 seconds left in the first overtime.
Gilbride, who had scored two other goals in the game including the one to send the game to overtime, fired a great shot on goal but Waxman made an even greater stop.
Kim Imbesi had seven saves for the Blue Devils.
Senior Allison Ambrozy won four of her seven draw controls in that final 15 minutes and gave the Quakers the possessions they had been looking for earlier. She also came out of a scrum after Manson’s overtime goal to help the Red and Blue hold onto the ball and run down the clock.
Duke received a blow less than two minutes into the match when Atlanmic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Emma Hamm (Baldwin School) went down with an ankle injury and was unable to return.
Making victory ever sweeter, Brower earned her 100th career win as a head coach.
Penn and Northwestern have met twice before in the past 12 months. Northwestern defeated the Quakers, 12-2, in last year's Final Four at Franklin Field. But Penn toppled the Wildcats, 11-7, on April 27, stopping their 36-game winning streak.
NOTE: NCAA rules dictate that should a tie remain at the end of regulation, two three-minute periods (changing sides at the end of the first) of stop-clock will be played. The team which leads at the end of six minutes wins the game. If the teams are still tied after six minutes, the game moves to three-minute sudden-victory periods where the first team to score wins.
Northwestern 16, Syracuse 8
Hilary Bowen scored six goals to lead top-seeded Northwestern to a triumph over Syracuse.
The Wildcats led only, 7-6, at halftime, but tallied nine consecutive goals to take complete control of the game. Megan Mosenson (Great Valley) tallied all three of her goals in the first half for the Orangewomen (18-3).
