IWLCA honors Philadelphia athletes with awards

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 6/15
The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) has given a number of awards to Philadelphia players for the 2008 season.
Penn goalie Sarah Waxman repeated as the winner of the Division I Goalie of the Year honor. Waxman, a senior, led the Quakers to the top ranking in the country in the regular season and a berth in the NCAA championship game. Waxman, a first-team All-American, led Penn to a 17-2 record and had a 6.27 goals against average and 113 saves.
Also in Division I, Drexel senior Jessica Bill was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Bill, a recipient of the Wapner Newman Collegiate Student-Athlete of the Week award in March, had a 3.81 grade point average while majoring in business administration.
Bill, an attacker, led Drexel with 39 goals and 46 points as she was named Second Team All-Colonial Athletic Association.
Meanwhile in Division II, national champion West Chester swept two awards. Stephanie Kienle (Henderson) was named Attacker of the Year and sophomore Katy Crouse (Boyertown) was named Defender of the Year.
Kienle, the only senior on a 20-1 team, led the nation in assists (78) and scoring (65 goals, 143 points), breaking the NCAA record for points in a single season. She finished with 389 points in her four-year career, smashing the NCAA all-time scoring mark in the process.

Crouse caused 48 turnovers this season, ranking fourth nationally with 2.29 caused turnovers per contest. The feisty defender was also averaged two groundballs per game.

The United Sports Training Center (USTC) in Downingtown is hosting a smorgasbord of women’s and girls’ lacrosse this weekend.
The major attractions are Saturday’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Under Armour North-South Senior All Star Games. They feature many of the top seniors in the country in Divisions I, II and III, including several All-Americans in the top division.

The Division I game begins at noon, followed by the Division II contest at 1:00 and the Division III game at 2:00.
Starting Friday, the USTC is hosting the All-American Showcase/Champions Cup, which involved 80 teams of the top scholastic players (incoming seniors and younger) from 25 states. That event, which runs through Sunday, is expected to draw over 300 college coaches in what has become one of the largest recruiting tournaments in the country.
The All-Star Games Saturday feature many big names from Philadelphia schools as well as Philly graduates who went on to excel out of the area. One of the most notable names is Notre Dame midfielder Caitlin McKinney (Germantown Academy), a first-team All-American, an Academic All-American, a Tewaaraton candidate and the Big East Midfielder of the Year.

Other All-Americans from the Philly area who were selected include Boston University's Lauren Morton (Gwynedd Mercy Academy, will not play due to injury) from the second team, and George Mason's Laura King (Springfield-Delco) and Penn's Melissa Lehman from the third team.
McKinney is one of 12 Division I women and 22 players overall named to the All-Star teams. Overall, 112 players were nominated by their coaches based on their availability for the game and were then selected by virtue of their playing career.
The Division II South team features All-American midfielder Stephanie Kienle (Henderson), the only senior from West Chester’s national championship team. The team is being coached by Golden Rams mentor Ginny Martino.

Kienle, West Chester dominate all-PSAC team
Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/13
As it prepares for its date in the NCAA Division II semifinals Thursday, West Chester University took home a slew of awards when the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) announced its all-conference honors Tuesday.
West Chester landed five players on the first team All-PSAC squad and two more on the second team. Stephanie Kienle (Henderson), Jackie Baker (Penncrest), Gina DiDomenicis, Katy Crouse (Boyertown), and Mary Beth Green (Henderson) were all first-team all-leaguers while Courtney Whiting (Downingtown East) and Lauren Tatios (West Chester East) earned second-team honors.
Kienle also copped PSAC player of the year accolades for the second straight season, following her 134-point effort in 2008.
Kienle led West Chester to its second straight undefeated season in league play (14-0) and an overall mark of 18-1. She is making her third straight appearance on the conference’s first team all-league squad.
The Golden Rams (18-1) will face Limestone (17-1) at 3 p.m. at Memorial Park in Houston, Texas, in one national semifinal as part of the NCAA’s Spring Sports Festival. Adelphi (16-0) will battle defending champion C.W. Post (15-1) in the other national semifinal at 12:30 p.m.
The nation’s leading scorer, who also tops the country in assists, Kienle scored 61 goals and registered an NCAA-record 73 assists this spring. Five of her tallies were game-winning goals, and the speedy forward also caused 12 turnovers.
Kienle also broke the NCAA record for career points in a win over East Stroudsburg on the final day of the regular season. She has 380 points in her four-year career entering the semifinals this weekend.
Freshman midfielder Claire Grimwood earned rookie of the year honors. She is third on the team in scoring with 62 points (40 goals, 22 assists), and had three game-winning goals while scooping 30 ground balls.
Baker, the 2008 PSAC Tournament MVP, is second on the team in scoring with 111 points and leads the club in goals scored with 77. She ranks third in the NCAA in scoring (111 points) and fifth in points per game (5.84). Her 4.05 goals per game average is sixth nationally. Baker was a second-team honoree her freshman year and a first-teamer a year ago.
Junior DiDomenicis (16 goals, 11 assists) is making her third appearance in as many years on the first team. The backbone of West Chester’s defensive midfield, DiDomenicis has excelled at winning possessions with her draw controls as well as marking the opposition’s top midfield threat.
Crouse earned her first All-PSAC honor with the first-team recognition this spring. The sophomore midfielder is one of West Chester’s most aggressive defenders. She has caused 46 turnovers this season, ranking fourth nationally with 2.42 caused turnovers per contest. The feisty defender is also 38th nationally in ground balls per game (2.84).
Green collected her first all-league honor and ranks second in the nation in goals-against average (6.41) and 12th in the country in saves (157). Additionally, her .588 save percentage is third nationally.
Whiting is also making her first appearance on the all-league squad. The junior midfielder has been excellent all year long on the draw, helping West Chester win valuable possessions and keep applying pressure on its opponents. Whiting ranks 17th nationally in both caused turnovers per game (1.53) and draw controls per game (2.56).
Tatios, a sophomore, has been one of the two staples in West Chester’s last line of defense before Green. Those two are big reasons West Chester’s defense ranks second nationally, allowing six goals per game.
The PSAC team is dominated by local players. The Coach of the Year is East Stroudsburg’s Lynn Elphick, a graduate of Owen J. Roberts. The local honorees:
All-PSAC
First Team Offense
Jackie Baker
