Blue Jays bow to Syracuse, 13-10, in finals

Phillylacrosse.com, Posted 5/26
Despite the efforts of four Philadelphia-area players, Johns Hopkins fell to Syracuse, 13-10, Sunday in the NCAA men’s Division I championship game in front of 48,970 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
Freshman attacker Kyle Wharton (Haverford School) scored one goal and senior middie George Castle (Penn Charter) added an assist while freshman middie Matt Dolente (Malvern Prep) won six of 12 face-offs for the Blue Jays (11-6), who failed in their quest to repeat as national champions.
Also, junior middie Brian Christopher (Springfield-Delco) had one shot for Johns Hopkins, which fell behind, 8-5, early in the second half and never could tie the score again.
Mike Leveille had one goal and two assists for the Orangemen (16-2) and earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Dan Hardy also had three goals for Syracuse and Paul Rabil pumped in six goals for the Blue Jays.
Christopher, Castle lead Blue Jays into finals

    Tony McDevitt
and Ken Clausen are not headed to the championship game.
But thanks to Brian Christopher and George Castle, Philadelphia will be well-represented in the NCAA Division I men’s title game Monday (1 p.m., ESPN TV) in Foxborough, Mass.
Christopher (Springfield-Delco) and Castle (Penn Charter) scored goals Saturday to help Johns Hopkins stun top-ranked Duke, 10-9, in the second semifinal at Gillette Stadium. The Blue Devils (18-2) – featuring senior defender McDevitt (Penn Charter) – were favored to win their first NCAA title.
In the opener, third-seeded Syracuse (15-2) overcame a five-goal deficit and edged second-seeded Virginia, 12-11, in double overtime when Mike Leveille scored his fifth goal of the game. That ended the season for Clausen (Hill School), a key defender for the Cavaliers (14-4) who had two groundballs.
Christopher, a reserve middie who also had two groundballs, tied the game for Hopkins, 2-2, early in the second quarter. Castle, a defense middie who had just one goal all year coming in, gave the Jays an 8-6 lead midway through the fourth period. Castle also scooped one groundball.
Also, freshman middie Matt Dolente (Malvern Prep) won one of four face-offs for Hopkins. Hopkins also features reserve freshman attacker Kyle Wharton (Haverford School).
McDevitt, playing in his last game, nabbed two groundballs and caused four turnovers for the Blue Devils. McDevitt had come back to use his fifth year of eligibility with a host of other Blue Devils after the NCAA offered the extra year to members of the 2006 team that lost the season due to false rape charges against several Duke players.
Hopkins also defeated Duke in the 2005 and 2007 championship games by one-goal margins.

The second-seeded Quakers (17-1) will play top-seeded Northwestern tonight at 7;00 for the crown. The three-time defending champion Wildcats (20-1) routed Syracuse, 16-8, in the first game of the doubleheader.
Manson (two goals) took a feed from Giulia Giordano off a free position opportunity.
“I am really proud of the girls after being down 7-4 and staying composed,” said Penn coach Karin Brower. “We were struggling coming up with the draw but made a couple changes and got the ball so we were able to run our offense and have those opportunities (to score).
“I’m really proud of our defense, they did an excellent job.”

Duke is coached by Haverford High graduate Kerstin Manning Kimel, a 1997 inductee into the Haverford High Hall of Fame.
Duke’s Carolyn Davis netted five goals and helped the Blue Devils (13-8) take a 7-4 lead early in the second half.
But tallies by Kaitlyn Lombardo, Melissa Lehman (three goals) and Ali DeLuca drew the Quakers even.
Lehman gave Penn the lead with 5:40 left in the game, but Duke's Lindsay Gilbride (two goals) tied it with a free position goal with one minute to play to send it into overtime. (CONTINUE)

West Chester finally wins second Division II title

After falling just short of its goal for four straight years, the West Chester women’s lacrosse team finally took the crown Saturday.

C.W. Post held West Chester scoreless over the final 22 minutes of the contest after the Rams had taken a 13-9 advantage. However, the Pioneers could get just three more shots past goalkeeper Mary Beth Green (Henderson), the last with two seconds remaining in the game, as their comeback bid fell short. Green had nine saves. (CONTINUE)
